Associations

Public adjusting is a small profession with a long memory, and most of it is organised through trade associations. Several cover a whole region rather than a single state, so the group nearest you may not have your state in its name.

General education, not advice

These organisations are independent of us and of each other, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by or a member of any of them. Descriptions summarise what each body publishes about itself; membership terms, dues and offerings change, so confirm anything that matters on the organisation's own site before joining or paying.

  • American Association of Public Insurance Adjusters

    AAPIA National dormant

AAPIA was a national association of public insurance adjusters, founded in 2004, that took part in regulatory and legislative comment on public adjuster issues, including submissions to the NAIC. Its public website is no longer serving content.

Checked 2026-08-28: aapia.org and www.aapia.org both return a Wix 'ConnectYourDomain' error page (HTTP 404), so the site is not currently published. An NAIC comment letter dated October 2024 still cites www.aapia.org, so the organisation was at least corresponding with regulators as of late 2024. Included as dormant because current activity could not be confirmed from a live official site.

It develops model laws, runs licensing and accreditation programmes, and publishes consumer education material.

    • Model laws and regulations
    • Regulator accreditation
    • Licensing and testing infrastructure
    • Consumer education resources

Relevant to public adjusters because its Public Adjuster Licensing Model Act is the template most states adapted, and its committees are where fee caps, contract requirements and solicitation rules are debated before states adopt them. The NAIC does not license or regulate adjusters directly; the states do.

    Covers
    Nationwide
    Membership
Membership is limited to state, territorial and District of Columbia insurance regulators; it is not open to individual adjusters

    • Preparedness and insurance-buying guidance (Roadmap to Preparedness)
    • Ask an Expert Q&A

    Nationwide

Not a membership body; its resources are published free to the public and it accepts donations and volunteers

    • Annual conference
    • Continuing education credits
    • Appraiser and umpire certification
    • Certified professional directories

Not a public adjuster trade body: its membership deliberately spans both sides of the claim. Included because its appraiser and umpire certifications are the most widely recognised credentials for the property insurance appraisal process that public adjusters use.

Professionals from across the property and windstorm insurance claims industry, per its membership page
