How to become a public adjuster in Alaska

Alaska does not issue a public adjuster license.

Alaska issues no public adjuster license; the Division of Insurance cautions that public adjusting may constitute the practice of law.

The pathway

Getting licensed in Alaska

No public adjuster license exists here. Alaska does not license or recognize public adjusters. That is not a green light: representing an insured in a claim for a fee may be treated as the practice of law, and consumer-protection rules still apply.

Confirm the current position with the Alaska Division of Insurance before offering services. Some adjusters licence in a neighbouring state that does regulate the work; whether that helps depends on facts this page cannot speak to.

What the regulator says

  1. Confirm on the Division of Insurance 'Licenses With Special Requirements' page that public adjusters are not licensed in Alaska.

  2. Understand that the Division cannot authorize or prohibit public adjusting; it can act only against unfair or deceptive practices under AS 21.36.125.

  3. Note the Division's warning that negotiating or interpreting claims for others may be the practice of law, which would require an Alaska law license.

  4. If you want to adjust claims for insurers, apply instead for the independent adjuster license under AS 21.27 (Pearson VUE exam; NIPR application).
